The Challenge

Armed with a $100,000 portfolio, groups of students will be asked to select their best picks from the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX).   Once the selections are completed, groups will be required to submit their stock portfolios to Mr. Messere where the information will be used to determine which group's portfolio gained the most (or lost the least) value up until the end of the semester.  Portfolio values and group rankings will be periodically updated at this section of the web site.

Picking and Researching Stocks

Since this exercise will be done in a computer lab, your group will use a disk containing an Excel program called "Stock Portfolio Selection Tool" (looks similar to sample shown below) to input all your transactions and print out a hard copy of your stock portfolio. Be sure to follow the program’s instructions before you begin entering any stock and purchase information. After printing out your portfolio, save it on the floppy disk as your group’s name and return the disk to Mr. Messere.

Recording Your Stock Transactions

Once you have printed out your portfolio and had it verified by Mr. Messere, visit the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) web site.   Click on the far right button My Stock List and then select the REGISTER button near the bottom of the page to begin the process of registering your group's portfolio.  Follow the instructions carefully. You will be prompted to enter a username and password. Be sure to record this in the spaces provided on your group’s printout of the "Stock Portfolio Selection Tool" program. (You will be handing this sheet in to the teacher, so make sure you also record your group’s user name and password for future use). Once registered, enter all the information regarding your group’s stock portfolio. When finished, print out a copy. This will be your group’s hard copy of your stock selections with original prices. Make sure you do not lose this sheet!

Be sure to record your group's password and user name in the spaces provided on the hard copy of the "Stock Portfolio Selection Tool" sheet when handing it in.

Updating Your Group's Stock Portfolio

Your group will be expected to submit weekly updates of your portfolio (usually every Monday at the beginning of class) up until the conclusion of the simulation. Updates simply involve printing out your group’s stock portfolio registered at the TSX’s web site. See the MY STOCK LINK section. (You will need your TSX user name and password each time you want to print out an update of your portfolio) These updates will be collected by the teacher and used to tabulate results and rankings which will be posted in the class and at the Grade 11 section of the course website.

Trading Stocks

In order to trade stocks which are not performing to your expectations, you must follow the rules below for a trade to be officially verified and recorded within the stock market competition:

1. All required information must be present on the 'Stock Transaction Record' sheet before any trade will be accepted.  (Use your browser's print function to print out a copy)
2. Groups will be allowed a maximum of one trade per week.
3. All transactions are subject to a flat rate commission of $50 applied to the sale of stock only, not purchases.
4. All shares in a particular stock must be sold when selling a stock. Groups are not allowed to hold proceeds in the form of cash. All proceeds from the sale of stock must be used to purchase new stock.
5. Closing prices for buy and sell orders must be shown to the broker (Mr. Messere) based on the most recent stock listing from the business section of the newspaper. No stock transactions will be undertaken without verification of closing prices.

Note:

  • Groups cannot purchase more than the volume of shares traded for a particular company on a trading day.
  • The stock surveillance team (Mr. Messere & other regulators) has the right to veto any trade that violates the rules of the competition

The 'Stock Transaction Record' sheet must be submitted to Mr. Messere so that group stock portfolios and rankings may be updated throughout the competition.

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL TEAMS!
